Number of rabid bats on the rise.

Infected bats found in 6 communities
By SHANTEE WOODARDS, Staff Writer
Published 07/13/09

The county Health Department is warning residents of an increasing number of rabid bats in the area.

Advertisement Since May, bats infected with rabies have been detected in six communities. Health officials issued notices to residents in those communities, advising them how to take precautions against rabies.

Rabies fact sheets also have been issued at county libraries and community health fairs.

Residents who come in contact with bats should call county Animal Control, which handles such reports 24 hours a day. The agency will attempt to capture the bat and get it tested.

"This time of year, bats are actively coming to the area after hibernation," said Kyle Shannon, the health department's environmental sanitation specialist.

"If a person has holes in their soffits or roofs, (bats) can get in," he added. "(With the area being the way it is), there's a much higher population of humans in the area. There's much less habitat for the bats and they've basically made houses and buildings their place to roost."

From May 13 to June 11, seven rabid bats were found in Annapolis, Crofton, Glen Burnie, Millersville, Pasadena and Severna Park. Health officials said they are concerned because their active season isn't over yet and these levels already are exceeding previous years.

There were five rabid bats detected in each of the past two summers, said Elin Jones, health department spokeswoman.

The state has 10 species of bats. Those that typically form colonies on buildings are little brown bats, big brown bats, northern long-eared bats and evening bats, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

Bats hibernate between November and February, and emerge between March and April. The babies are born in May and June, and begin to fly with their mothers by the end of the summer. They start searching for winter homes in September and October, the DNR Web site stated.

The health department's reports come from a variety of sources, but mainly from Animal Control or from residents who have come in contact with a bat. Bat bites can easily go undetected, so anyone who isn't sure if they've been bitten should seek medical care as if they have been.

In situations where bats are located in a home, the resident should try to trap it with a coffee can or bucket if that can be done with limited exposure to the bat, Shannon said.

The most important thing is to contact Animal Control instead of releasing a possibly infected animal back into the environment, Shannon said.

To report a bat to Animal Control, call 410-222-8900.

ATV’s and ELECTRIC AND GAS/MOTORIZED GO-PED INFORMATION

It is unlawful to operate a go-ped on a public street, private property generally accessible to the public, or on sidewalks.

How does driving my go-ped on a public road violate Maryland motor vehicle law?

The Maryland Transportation Article requires all vehicles to be registered; except for those with special exceptions. To register a vehicle, you must present a certificate of title to the Motor Vehicle Administration.

MANY HELPING HANDS ON BEACH AND PLAYGROUND PROJECTS

Thanks to all those who are helping to make sure Beverly Beach remains an outstanding community.  Neighbors worked on the playground and beach cleanup projects in the last few weeks.  Though there’s still painting and resurfacing to be done at the playground, we accomplished a lot. On Saturday, March 25, a group sanded the playground equipment.  On Saturday, April 1, 2006 many neighbors--rakes, wagons, wheel barrows, children, and trash bags in hand-- cleaned the beach and surrounding areas and weeded the garden areas.  Another crew began painting the slide, laying out the space for the new crawl tunnel, and moving benches.  Wind and rain delayed the painting, so we’ll continue that this week and Saturday, April 8 as weather permits. Shelby Lawson has agreed to lead a group of her middle school friends to paint fun designs on the equipment when the base coat is finished and Paul Galloway has offered to hang the new swings when they arrive.

Neighbor Rick Anthony is working to secure equipment so that we can dig out the playground surface and replace it with 4 inches of sand topped by 4 inches of mulch.  We need help spreading the sand and mulch and installing the new crawl tunnel.  Please check this website and the sign at the community entrance for the date for this work and come to lend a hand.

A giant THANK YOU to all those who gave their time and talent to the beach clean up and refurbishing of the playground so far:

Fran and Joe Berry, Terry Berg and Randy Johnson, Randy Raine, Jennifer and Paul Galloway and children, Sharon and Ray Kelser and son, Stacy Fabian and children, Rusty Baker and Jennifer Rehill and children, Tina Tripp and children, Nancy Kline and children, Sheila and Tony Lawson and children, Megan and Jeff Sykes and children, Sarah Bray and children, Charlie McCallum, Marion Lindstron and children, and Bruce Hellstern.  A very special thanks to Tom Casey who lives in Elkridge.  Tom spent the day with us at his mom, Dorothy Casey’s, request.

Rain Barrel Workshop

Learn how to use rainwater and snow melt for use during dry months and to prevent storm water runoff that is a problem in our community. On Wednesday, April 23 at 7:00 pm at the beach, Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center director, Steve Barry, will provide one hour training on how rain barrel use controls runoff and how to install your rain barrel. He will have 50 rain barrels to distribute to participants. You must be present or make arrangements for someone else to pick it up that night. The fee is $30 per barrel. It will be collected at the workshop. The barrel will come assembled. We applied to the Chesapeake Bay Trust for a grant for this project. An assembled rain barrel at retail is $125; making one yourself is $85. Arlington Echo will supply our barrels for $60 each. The CBT requires that workshop participants commit to paying part of the cost. BBCA is also helping to fund this project. Pizza, drinks, and dessert will be served. Children may attend with parent supervision. In case of rain, we’ll meet at Mayo Community Hall.

Don’t miss this opportunity. Contact Terry Berg at 410 974-9695 for additional
information or send an email ec@beverlybeach.org to let her know of your interest. Be sure to include your name, address, and phone number in the email. The deadline for signing up is April 18.

Boat Ramp Users:

So, the next time you notice a low tide and you need some exercise feel free to move some of the sand back to where it belongs. Please call me Jeff Sykes, Dock Master, at 410-570-0608 with any questions.

U.S. Census

With the U.S. Census process beginning, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises people to be cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of fraud or identity theft. The first phase of the 2010 U.S. Census is under way as workers have begun verifying the addresses of
households across the country. Eventually, more than 140,000 U.S. Census workers will count every person in the United States and will gather information about every person living at each address including name, age, gender, race, and other relevant data.

The big question is - how do you tell the difference between a U.S. Census worker and a con artist? BBB offers the following advice:

  • If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will have a badge,
a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas bag, and a confidentiality
notice. Ask to see their identification and their badge before
answering their questions. However, you should never invite anyone you
    don't know into your home.
  • Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to verify address
    information.
  • Do not give your Social Security number, credit card or banking
information to anyone, even if they claim they need it for the U.S.
    Census.

REMEMBER, NO MATTER WHAT THEY ASK, YOU REALLY ONLY NEED TO TELL THEM HOW
MANY PEOPLE LIVE AT YOUR ADDRESS.

While the Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information, such
as a salary range, YOU DON'T HAVE TO ANSWER ANYTHING AT ALL ABOUT YOUR
FINANCIAL SITUATION.

The Census Bureau will not ask for Social Security, bank account, or
credit card numbers, nor will employees solicit donations. Any one
asking for that information is NOT with the Census Bureau.

AND REMEMBER, THE CENSUS BUREAU HAS DECIDED NOT TO WORK WITH ACORN ON
GATHERING THIS INFORMATION.

No Acorn worker should approach you saying he/she is with the Census
Bureau.

Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone, mail, or in
person at home.

However, the Census Bureau will not contact you by Email, so be on the
lookout for Email scams impersonating the Census.

Never click on a link or open any attachments in an Email that are
supposedly from the U.S. Census Bureau.
